WELCOME
to my book of art
Painting
I paint what I know,
Universal symbols and shapes,
ancestors talking in call and response rhythms,
going back to times when life
Was art,
a way of life.
Ancestors respond
in brush strokes.
I paint what I know.
I remember.
I feel and
taste
the art
like the Igbo women
who paint
in their Uli way.
A legacy of universal shapes and
colors
are tickets
to travel on rainbows,
back and forth
in time and space;
colors and shapes
are my tradition
They are the keys
I use
to open
doors that tell
me
who
I
am.

ABOUT ME
Linda Hiwot has lived in New York City since childhood although she was born in Providence, Rhode Island into a family of visual artists. As an adult Linda resumed painting, at first approaching the canvas intuitively. When her investigations required more complex technical information, she sought training while retaining her original sensibility. Hiwot began her professional career exhibiting in Brooklyn, and since then she has exhibited throughout the Tri-state area, national and international communities.
Linda's paintings are frequently collaged and constructed. Her work is noted for her use of color, shape and composistion and she has developed a courageous, personal idiom. A key component of Hiwot's work is her use of color and how this manifests in unusual relationships. While her palette empasizes primary colors and strong hues, the actual color harmony is somtimes startling.
Her subject matter is autobiographical, mystical and mythical. She operates the world of the imaginary, of displaced beings amidst tropical foilage. Her work applies itself to the realm of lush, natural, unspoiled worlds of nature. "So infused with fey magical witchery, Latin American style, is Ms. Hiwot's work that it could easily illustrate the Garcia-Marquez novel, "One Hundred Years of Solitude." Grace Glueck, ART IN REVIEW, The New York Times.
Linda is a graduate in painting of Pratt Institute. She has received numerous awards and fellowships, and has curated a number of exhibitions. Her work is in local, national, public and international collections.
